News Summary

As winter weather hits San Antonio from January 6-10, 2025, local schools are adjusting schedules for safety. Comfort ISD is closing on January 9, while others like Mason ISD and Crystal City ISD are delaying openings. Most schools, including Alamo Heights and Northside ISD, will hold regular classes but cancel outdoor activities. With wind chills in the 20s and 30s, schools are promoting indoor activities and urging families to stay warm. School districts are monitoring the weather closely and will communicate any updates to the community.

San Antonio Schools Gear Up for Winter Weather: What You Need to Know

Hey there, San Antonio families! Grab your mittens and hats because winter weather is making its way into our area from January 6 through 10, 2025. With the cold temperatures and the potential for icy conditions, many local schools are tweaking their schedules to keep everyone safe. Here’s the scoop on what to expect this week!

School Closures and Delays

First up, we have Comfort ISD, which has already announced a closure on January 9 due to concerns over potentially icy roads. It’s always best to keep our kids safe, so this decision makes sense given the circumstances.

Other districts, such as Mason ISD in Mason County and Crystal City ISD in Zavala County, are taking a different approach by delaying their start times. Students in these areas should prepare for a later report to school on Friday, January 10, with many starting at 9:00 a.m. or even later. Always a good way to catch some extra Z’s, right?

Regular Classes But Stay Warm!

The good news for most of our local schools is that regular classes are expected to be held. Schools including Alamo Heights, North East, Northside, Judson, and Hays Consolidated ISDs have confirmed they will be operating as usual on January 9. However, with the chilly forecast, North East ISD and Judson ISD have opted to cancel all outdoor after-school activities for the day. It’s a smart move considering the gusty winds and chilly temperatures!

Indoor Fun and Safety First

Speaking of the strong winds expected on Friday morning, let’s talk about how it might feel outside. Wind chill values are predicted to sink into the 20s and 30s, making those commutes really brisk. So, a friendly reminder to everyone – make sure to dress warmly and prep for those cold temperatures, especially while heading to and from school.

In a show of caution and creativity, Northside ISD plans to have indoor recess options available during the cold snap. It’s always a challenge to keep kids active when the weather doesn’t cooperate, but these indoor options are a fantastic way to ensure the children still have fun and stay engaged.

Monitoring the Situation

School districts are closely monitoring weather alerts and road conditions. They are committed to keeping families informed about any changes that might happen as the weather situation evolves. So, keep your eyes and ears open, particularly as we progress through the week.

Chilly Nights Ahead

As we forecast the rest of the week, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, hitting the upper 20s in San Antonio and even lower 20s in the surrounding Hill Country by Friday night. As we approach the weekend, let’s remember to stay warm and keep an eye on our little ones!

Be Prepared!

In summary, while many schools will continue with regular schedules, there are some exceptions you’ll want to keep in mind. Make sure your kids are bundled up and ready for a chilly commute. As always, if any changes come about, districts will let families know as soon as they can. Stay warm, San Antonio!
