SAN ANTONIO — A father’s struggle for life has come to a heartbreaking end. Ricardo Plata, known as Rick, succumbed to injuries sustained during a shooting at a bus stop over a month ago. The incident that took place on September 7 has left his family reeling, grappling with the suddenness of this tragedy and the ongoing search for justice.
Rick fought valiantly for 40 days in the ICU, but ultimately, his strength gave out on October 17. His niece, _Brenna Plata-Robles_, shared her thoughts with the community, expressing disbelief over the family’s heartbreaking loss. “I thought maybe he had a little bit longer,” she shared. “It is our tragedy, but it also happens every day.” Given the violent nature of his death, it’s a stark reminder of how prevalent gun-related incidents can be.
His son, _Joseph Plata_, spoke about his father’s determination during the challenging days in the hospital. “He did fight through the whole 40 days,” he said. “He did everything he could.” The family had held onto hope, but this hope was shattered when they had to accept the reality that Rick had lost his battle.
On that tragic September day, Rick was at a bus stop located at West Skyview Drive and Bandera Road when he was shot multiple times. Family members revealed that, despite his injuries, Rick remained conscious long enough to communicate with emergency crews. “He was able to respond to the paramedics and tell them to call my family and who to call,” Brenna recounted, highlighting the strength and bravery Rick displayed even in his final moments.
Despite the urgency of the situation, investigators are still in the dark regarding what exactly precipitated the shooting and who was behind it. Brenna spoke out about the injustice of the violence, stating simply, “He didn’t deserve that. No one does.” In Rick’s absence, the family is left with memories of a man who deeply cared for everyone around him.
Rick was known for his _loving nature_ and passion for the outdoors. “He loved the outdoors,” Brenna reminisced, “He loved to ride his bike.” These cherished memories are what the family wishes to hold onto as they navigate their grief.
Joseph’s emotions were raw as he expressed a poignant message directed at his father’s shooter. “I hope you are comfortable with your life,” he stated, filled with sorrow. “As they say, may the Lord have mercy on your soul. But, at this moment in time, I don’t believe I will.” His words encapsulate the pain and fury felt by families who have reaped the bitter cost of violence.
In response to this senseless tragedy, the Plata family has organized a vigil, which is set to take place Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the location where the shooting occurred. The community is invited to gather to honor Rick’s memory, support the family, and stand against the violence that has disrupted their lives.
As the investigation continues, the San Antonio Police Department’s homicide division is actively pursuing leads, though they have yet to identify the shooter. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to come forward and assist in bringing closure to this heartbreaking matter.
In times like this, it is crucial to remember the lives affected by needless violence and the families left behind. The Plata family’s love for Rick will forever echo in their hearts as they seek justice and healing in the wake of this tragedy.
