San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the city prepares for its very first Spacecon, a thrilling sci-fi convention that is set to ignite the imaginations of fans from all over the galaxy! Taking over the Freeman Coliseum from October 25-27, this event is a treasure trove for anyone who loves Star Wars, Star Trek, the Marvel Universe, and a plethora of other franchises. Get ready to meet some of your favorite stars, attend panels, and dive deeper into your fandom!

What to Expect at Spacecon

Spacecon is more than just a gathering; it’s an experience packed with fun for family and fans of all ages. Over the three-day weekend, you can look forward to meeting William Shatner, along with many other stars who are ready to share their journeys in the world of science fiction. The event will feature plenty of celebrity appearances and comic artists, plus panel discussions where fans can learn about topics ranging from the resurgence of fandom culture to the art of universe building with Jim Starlin, the mastermind behind Thanos!

For those looking to channel their inner Jedi, there will be interactive Jedi experiences, thanks to a local lightsaber performance club. And don’t worry if you’re new to this whole space-faring adventure! There’s even a special Starcade for kids, complete with free-play activities to ensure that everyone, even the little ones, have a blast.

Family-Friendly Fun

Parents, rejoice! Kids under 14 get in for free, making it a perfect weekend outing for families. Imagine your younglings dressing up in their favorite characters at the cosplay competitions or joining in some pre-Halloween trick-or-treating through the vendor booths. With over 150 exhibitors showcasing toys, collectibles, light sabers, books, and yummy snacks, there’s something for everyone at Spacecon.

To grab your tickets, day passes start at $75, while a three-day pass is available for $199. Times for this star-studded event are Friday from 11 am to 7 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. You can purchase your tickets at spaceconsa.com and get all the latest updates via the Spacecon app, available on Google Play and the App Store.

Celebrating Día de los Muertos

As if that weren’t enough, San Antonio’s vibrant culture comes alive even more during the Halloween season with the annual celebration of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. This rich tradition honors those who’ve passed away through colorful altars filled with photos, marigolds, and traditional bread—the pan de muerto.

Events to Experience

Throughout the city, various festivals will be held, each offering unique ways to honor loved ones. For instance, at the Mission San José, you can view beautiful ofrendas created by descendants of the original settlers every day through November 2. Meanwhile, the Briscoe Western Art Museum invites you to contribute to an altar that celebrates influential figures in Western art, running until November 4.

The Day of the Dead Festival and River Parade taking place from October 25-27 in La Villita will be a sight to behold, featuring a stunning 39-foot tall Catrina statue. Enjoy live music, food, artisan markets, and more as you soak in the vibrant atmosphere with friends and family. The parade on the River Walk will showcase beautifully decorated floats and traditional costumes on October 25.

If you prefer a lively, artistic setting, check out Muertos Fest happening at Hemisfair on October 26-27. Over 80 altars will be displayed, alongside five music stages, art markets, workshops, and a procession each evening. There’s truly something for everyone!

Join in the Festivities

Whether you’re drawn to the stars at Spacecon or the rich culture of Día de los Muertos, San Antonio is the place to be this exciting weekend! It’s a wonderful time to make memories, walk among your favorite characters, and honor those who have touched our lives.
