San Antonio, the vibrant heart of Texas, is buzzing with discussions after a recent poll conducted by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) revealed some interesting insights from the local community. Released on September 23, the poll aimed to gauge the opinions of registered voters on a variety of topics including city council salaries, new sports arenas, and upcoming charter amendments.
The UTSA Center for Public Opinion Research (CPOR) conducted the survey from September 11 to September 16, reaching out to 692 voters in Bexar County. It seems residents have some reservations about several initiatives currently on the table. Notably, a higher percentage of voters showed reluctance when it comes to supporting new downtown sports facilities. Specifically, only 36% expressed their support for a new Spurs arena, while an overwhelming 41% were against it.
The sentiment around a potential new ballpark for the San Antonio Missions mirrored these concerns—as 40% of voters said they favored the project, but 35% were opposed. Interestingly, the San Antonio City Council recently approved plans for a $160 million minor league baseball stadium in downtown, which has raised some eyebrows and concerns among residents. Critics are particularly worried about the effect the stadium will have on local residents, especially when it comes to the Soap Factory apartments, few affordable housing options in the area slated for redevelopment.
When asked about potential pay increases for city council members and the mayor, the response was decidedly against it. Over 50% of voters indicated they would not support salary hikes for the City Council, and a striking 70% dismissed the idea of removing caps on the city manager’s pay and tenure. This suggests a strong desire among Bexar County voters for fiscal prudence over increased government spending.
A staggering 80% of voters reported being unfamiliar with the charter amendments set to be presented on the ballot for the November 5, 2024, election. As these amendments could significantly influence the structure and compensation of local governance, raising awareness among voters may be crucial in the lead-up to election day.
Aside from local issues, the poll also touched on the upcoming presidential election, and here the numbers paint a different picture. A solid 53% of respondents indicated they would support Vice President Kamala Harris, while 35% favored former President Donald Trump. This reflects a noticeable trend in voter sentiments as the election draws nearer.
Furthermore, Bexar County’s U.S. Senate race paints a supportive picture for challenger Colin Allred, who is currently leading incumbent Ted Cruz, with 44% backing Allred versus 29% for Cruz according to the same poll. This could signal a shift in political dynamics as residents weigh their options ahead of one of the most consequential elections in recent history.
The CPOR team plans to conduct another poll in late October to keep a finger on the pulse of voter sentiment as election day approaches. As San Antonio grapples with these decisions, it’s clear that residents are taking their civic duties seriously, ready to cast their votes based on the issues that impact their daily lives. Stay tuned—San Antonio’s voters are making their voices heard loud and clear!
