San Antonio Residents Share Snapshots of Sunday Morning Rain

On a typical July morning, the people of San Antonio, Bexar County, and South Central Texas would be greeted by the warming Texas sun. But Sunday morning was far from typical. The parched region was blessed with a welcome, albeit temporary, respite from the usual summer conditions: rain.

Record-Breaking Rainfall

According to weather experts, this was not just any ordinary summer shower. The rainfall recorded at the San Antonio International Airport set a new benchmark for this time of year. It surpassed the previous record set on July 28, 1934, which saw .74 inches of precipitation. The refreshed and dampened sun-scorched lands of the region measured inches of much-needed rain, a rare spectacle indeed for this time of year.

The area’s weather forecasters predict a return to normal sunny, high-temp skies, with typical late July/early August temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s in the week ahead. The segue back to customary conditions, however, did not dampen residents’ spirits as they chronicled the unique event.

Residents Document Unusual Weather

KSAT viewers across the region grabbed their devices and started sharing their photos and videos of the unusual weather phenomenon. From images of rainfall drenching thirsty gardens to measurements of accumulated water in various neighborhoods, the event captured the attention of the community.

Sharon Ausbury from Lookout Canyon Creek reported an impressive 5.5 inches of rain since midnight 7/27. In Marion, Dale recorded 2-3/4” of rainfall, hitting the bullseye. Sameer (@210_deek) of The Vineyard neighborhood reported an impressive morning total of 1.18”. And it wasn’t just about the measurements; the sight of rain was a welcome one for residents weary of the hot, dry summer.

Auntie Lou of San Antonio happily shared, “My thirsty yard is loving the rain on the Westside”, while another resident, millie69 chimed in, “Much needed. My plants don’t mind.”

Weather Chronicles Through KSAT Connect

Residents reported their rainfall tidbits through the use of KSAT Connect. This platform allows weather observers from all walks of life to share their local weather phenomena with others, simply by clicking a camera icon to upload their photos or videos. Once uploaded, these pieces became part of a collective diary, recording the surprise and excitement of this uncharacteristically damp July morning.

Forecast Ahead

While the rainfall may have been record-breaking and while the cooler temperatures are unlikely to persist, these occurrences have brought temporary relief and joy to a region often beleaguered by harsh, dry conditions. As the normal weather patterns resume with rising temperatures, residents can look back at their digital mementos of an extraordinary July morning.

The event serves as a reminder of how swiftly nature can swing and how important it is to relish these fleeting moments of respite. And as for the relief and joy this weather anomaly brought to the parched lands and people of the region, only time will reveal if another surprise is in store this summer.
