San Antonio Sushi Bar Closes After Nearly Two Decades

After nearly 20 years of serving high quality, traditional Japanese cuisine to the community, San Antonio’s beloved Godai Sushi Bar and Restaurant will regrettably be closing its doors for the last time on Saturday, August 31, 2024. The news has sent a wave of sadness over the community that for two decades, made Godai a part of their culinary routine.

End of an Era

The restaurant, since opening its doors in 2005, has been renowned for its variety of Japanese-style dishes encompassing sushi, spring rolls, and fried rice. It was admired not just for its mouth-watering dishes, but also for the welcoming space and genuine hospitality it extended to the vibrant community of San Antonio.

The announcement was made by the owner, William (Goro) Pitchford, through social media. The post reflected upon the toll the year has taken on him, both mentally and physically, while not offering an explicit reason for the closure.

As the Sun Sets

Currently placed on West Avenue, the sushi spot has been a go-to for San Antonio residents and visitors alike. Pitchford, in his message, mentioned plans to lease out the kitchen and restaurant, indicating a possibility for a new culinary venture for that space.

While this definite close is certainly heart-breaking for the devoted patrons of Godai, they can continue to stay updated through Pitchford’s Facebook page where he pledges to share more updates in the future.

Grateful Goodbye

In his heartfelt post, Pitchford did not fail to express gratitude to his diligent team of employees. Recognizing their hard work and dedication, he thanked them for their service, acknowledging the invaluable role they played in shaping the legacy of Godai Sushi Bar and Restaurant.

Final Thoughts

As locals and visitors alike come to terms with the closure of this much-loved spot, the San Antonio culinary scene won’t be the same. However it is hoped that whatever new venture takes over the now soon-to-be vacant space on West Avenue, it will bring with it the same love for food and community spirit that Godai Sushi Bar and Restaurant has embodied for nearly two decades.
