March promises electrifying performances across various genres, with events supporting diversity and community spirit, including the KOOP Radio Day Party and the family-friendly Fest of Tails.
This March, the vibrant city of San Antonio will be shining bright at the renowned SXSW festival in Austin! It’s that time of year when musical talents from across the state gather to electrify the stage, and San Antonio is making its mark with a lineup packed with incredible local bands ready to steal the spotlight!
Mark your calendars! On March 14, the sensational band Volcán will take to the stage at Lamberts for an official showcase. This powerhouse 11-member ensemble mixes cumbia, salsa, and calypso like no other. With their unique sound, they’re set to bring the energy and showcase their love for original cumbia to audiences far and wide, marking their third official show at SXSW in just four years! What a feat!
Another star on the rise, Vanita Leo, a proud San Antonio native, will be shaking things up in the Tejano scene. Catch her performing on March 12 at Hotel Vegas and again on March 14 at Vaquero Taquero. Vanita’s music is an exciting blend of pop and cumbia, featuring hit singles like “Solo Tu BB” and “Putazos Al Corazón.” Get ready to groove to some infectious beats!
If you’re a fan of diverse musical styles, don’t miss Los Juanos, who will be hitting Lamberts on March 13. Known for their innovative fusion of conjunto, corrido, cumbia Norteña, and indie-alternative vibes, Los Juanos promise a memorable performance that combines the best of many worlds. Band member Eddie Longoria believes that SXSW is a fantastic opportunity for artists to gain exposure and connect with other musicians, paving the way for exciting collaborations.
R&B artist Xavier Omär will also be showcasing his talent on March 13 at Parish. Guy’s got some serious skills – his single “Feelings 4 You” was even added to Barack Obama’s Favorite Music of 2022 playlist! With influences like Kanye West and John Legend, his performance is sure to be a highlight for R&B fans!
Hip-hop enthusiasts can look forward to rapper Spy MC from the group Bad Newz Bexarz, who will feature in an official showcase on March 15 at Shangri-La. Spy MC is ready to bring the heat and entertain the crowd with dynamic beats and clever lyrics!
While many San Antonio artists shine in the official showcases, there are also plenty of unofficial concerts where locals can strut their stuff. The Chicana punk rock band Fea, for instance, will headline the Queerest Spring Break at Full Circle Bar on March 7-8, featuring amazing queer vendors and fabulous drag shows. Truly, a celebration of diversity and talent!
Mark March 9 in your calendars! San Antonio composer Nathan Felix is curating the KOOP Radio Day Party at Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches, where he aims to showcase a diverse array of musical acts while supporting local Austin talent. This is one event you don’t want to miss!
And what better way to wrap up this music-filled festival than by attending the Fest of Tails on March 15 at McAllister Park? This family-friendly event combines the joy of furry friends and colorful kites, featuring dog costume contests, carnival games, and food vendors. Plus, there’s a wonderful opportunity for dog adoptions in partnership with the Animal Defense League of Texas and San Antonio Pets Alive!
