Hey there, San Antonio! If you’ve ever found yourself caught in traffic on Alamo Ranch Parkway, we’ve got some great news for you. The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority (RMA) has just approved a whopping $94 million project to widen the parkway. This exciting upgrade will expand the roadway from four lanes to a bustling eight lanes, stretching over its 2.4-mile length from Loop 1604 to Calaveras Way. And while you might have to wait a bit for the construction to kick off—mark your calendars for the summer of 2027—the anticipation is certainly worth it for the relief it’s set to bring to the booming Northwest Side.
Now, let’s talk numbers! The RMA predicts that, with traffic projected to surge in the coming decades, the expanded parkway could cut travel time by a staggering 75%. Currently, about 22,000 to 27,000 vehicles navigate this stretch daily, but by 2050, experts expect that number to skyrocket to between 80,000 and 90,000. Can you imagine how that would impact your daily commute?
But that’s not all—there’s more good news for commuters. During the same meeting where the parkway expansion was approved, the RMA board also set aside $1.1 million for preliminary engineering on another project aimed at making our roads safer and more efficient. This involves building an overpass to take Walzem Road over the Union Pacific railroad track on the Northeast Side, which should help eliminate the long waits for those pesky trains.
Mike Lynd Jr., chairman of the RMA board, expressed his excitement, saying that these projects are vital for improving the quality of life for both residents and visitors of Bexar County. “Our staff has worked tirelessly to identify roadway improvements in our community,” he added, proving that they are truly committed to making our drives smoother.
But wait, there’s even more improvement on the horizon! The board also allocated a nifty $7 million to fund the design and acquire the right-of-way for expanding a four-mile stretch of Evans Road, from Wortham Oaks Boulevard to Wagon Road. This project, overall estimated to cost about $52 million, is also crucial for reducing congestion in that area. Art Reinhardt, the director of the county’s public works department, noted that while the designs haven’t started yet, they will likely include a mix of additional travel and turn lanes.
Speaking of the future, the RMA board green-lighted $16 million toward design and right-of-way costs for expanding a 4.4-mile stretch of Abbott and Graytown roads on the far East Side, near St. Hedwig. Collectively, these upgrades are estimated to cost around $106 million. Sounds like a busy few years ahead for local road construction!
Reinhardt further shared that they’ll be looking for funding through the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO), which helps decide how state and federal transportation funds can be allocated. “If a project is selected, AAMPO will fund 80% of the construction costs,” he explained. The remaining costs would likely come from either Bexar County or the Advanced Transportation District.
So, as we gear up for these exciting improvements in San Antonio’s infrastructure, it sounds like we’ve got a lot to look forward to in the coming years. While waiting for these major projects to unfold, you might want to consider an alternate route during your commute! Keeping an eye on the progress is key because once these expansions are complete, the days of frustrating traffic jams could soon be a thing of the past.
