New construction work has kicked off on one of the city’s most traveled highways — Interstate 10. So, here’s the scoop: After wrapping up necessary repairs to the upper-level bridge on Westbound I-10, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has swung into action with Phase 2 of their bridge joint repairs. This new phase will focus on the Eastbound upper lever bridge, stretching from Fulton Avenue to Frio Street.

The first phase of these repairs began back in May 2024 and was expected to finish by June — and it did! So, hats off to TxDOT for hitting that milestone. The Westbound repairs, which caused some headaches with alternating lane closures, are already completed as of mid-September. However, the job isn’t over yet!

What Can You Expect?

Starting now, the Eastbound repairs are expected to last through December 2024. During this time, one lane is going to stay open to traffic around the clock to ease some of the potential congestion. However, it’s not all smooth sailing. As of now, traffic has been slow, especially with backups extending to Fresno Avenue. If your morning routine includes taking this route, make sure you leave home a little earlier to avoid the frustration of sitting in traffic.

This isn’t just a little touch-up job; it’s a massive undertaking costing approximately $25.9 million. The improvements will affect over 5 miles of highway, specifically along I-35 from S. Laredo St. to I-37/Camden St., and on I-10 from I-35 to Hildebrand Ave. The overall project will unfold in several phases, and currently, we are in the second phase.

So what exactly are they doing? Well, there’s a range of repairs on the to-do list. These include everything from roadway surfacing and structure repairs to bridge joint replacements. They’re also taking care of a ramp to Brooklyn Ave./McCullough Ave. that sustained damage from a fire previously. This project’s completion is projected for fall 2025 after five more phases of work are tackled.
