This past Monday, the city of San Antonio came together for a solemn yet profoundly important occasion. It marked the one-year anniversary of the horrific Hamas attack on Israel—a day that left many families shattered, their lives irrevocably changed. The San Antonio Jewish community gathered at Temple Beth El to commemorate the lives lost, reflect on the past year, and offer emotional support to one another.
Event attendees shared a common bond, many having friends and family residing in Israel. The emotional weight of the day was evident on everyone’s faces, but there was also a sense of community and hope shining through. Among the attendees was the BarYadin family, who have become a representation of resilience since last year’s events.
We were among the first to bring you the story of Ze’ev BarYadin, who, immediately following the attack, made the brave choice to fly back to Israel and enlist with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a Lone Soldier. Now, Ze’ev is back in San Antonio with his family, and the community couldn’t be happier to embrace him once again.
Reuben BarYadin, Ze’ev’s father, shared his son’s journey and the difficult choices that accompanied it. After dedicating several months on the front lines with his troop, Ze’ev felt it was time to return home to his family. However, with the ongoing conflict, thoughts of going back to fight for his homeland linger in his mind. Reuben mentioned that while Ze’ev is temporarily back in San Antonio, there’s always a possibility he might return if the situation necessitates it.
“We’re very supportive of his decision,” Reuben stated with a sense of pride in his voice. “He stays connected with his army buddies, keeping in touch with the news. Our hearts are in Israel, hoping for the war to end.” As a family, they remain engaged and united, supporting each other’s feelings in this trying time.
Reuben also expressed just how difficult this past year has been for families like theirs. “We have family and friends in Israel,” he stressed. “Everyone here has been affected, and the biggest need right now for the San Antonio Jewish Community is not just physical assistance, but moral and emotional support.”
In the face of uncertainty, gatherings like the one at Temple Beth El serve as a much-needed reminder of the importance of community. Sharing feelings, connecting with others, and finding solace in each other’s presence creates a space for healing. The sense of togetherness is clear: the San Antonio Jewish community stands strong in their collective hopes for peace and safety for their loved ones in Israel.
As the group reflected on the sorrows of the past year, they also shared aspirations for a brighter future where violence and conflict have been replaced with peace and healing. Families like the BarYadins are proof that love and support can withstand even the harshest of challenges, and as San Antonio continues to rally behind them, the hope that tomorrow will be better is something everyone holds onto tightly.
