Sponsor Our ArticlesAs the leaves begin to change and a crisp breeze enters San Antonio, the shift to cooler weather brings more than just a seasonal change; it can also affect our health. With the arrival of fall, many of us start thinking about the flu, colds, and other respiratory illnesses that tend to spike during this time of year. To combat this, University Health is hosting a free vaccine drive-thru event this Saturday, which aims to protect the community as we step into the fall season.
The drive-thru event will take place on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Freeman Coliseum, located at 3201 E. Houston St.. This is a fantastic opportunity to get vaccinated against not just the flu but other respiratory viruses that might be lurking around the corner. It’s important to note that, while the vaccines are free, participants must register online beforehand to streamline the process. So, if you’re planning to attend, be sure to take a moment to sign up!
The urgency behind this vaccine drive-thru isn’t just about preventing the flu; it’s part of a larger strategy to improve community health. Public health experts emphasize that prevention is key, especially as the holidays approach. Dr. Jason Bowling from UT Health emphasizes, “What we start to see is a change in the relative humidity. It gets a little bit drier, and it’s thought that might allow some of these respiratory viruses to be more transmissible, transmit a little more easily.”
The doctor also pointed out how the upcoming holiday season tends to bring people together indoors, making it easier for illnesses like COVID-19, flu, and RSV to spread. Given the recent surge of COVID cases over the summer due to increased travel, it’s critical to stay ahead of these seasonal health challenges.
At the current moment, health officials are observing a notable amount of rhinovirus circulating, which is one of the primary causes of the common cold. Dr. Bowling noted that the vaccination rates in Bexar County are relatively low. This makes Saturday’s event even more vital as a way to boost these numbers and ensure that the population is safeguarded against these common illness threats.
In addition to this Saturday’s event, University Health plans to host three more vaccine clinics throughout November. These events aim to provide additional opportunities for residents to get vaccinated and promote awareness about the importance of staying healthy during the winter months. Keep an eye out for notifications about these upcoming drives!
If you’re planning to attend the free vaccine drive-thru, make sure to register online. Arriving early could mean a shorter wait time, which is always a bonus! Bring along your health insurance card if you have one, but remember, the vaccines are free regardless, so don’t let that stop you from taking this critical step in protecting your health and the health of others.
Ultimately, protecting ourselves through vaccination is a community effort. As we welcome the fall and the many gatherings that come with the season, let’s prioritize our health and the health of those around us. By participating in the vaccine drive-thru, you not only help yourself but also help create a safer environment for everyone during these chilly months.
So mark your calendars for Saturday, gather your family and friends, and head on over to Freeman Coliseum. Together, we can make a difference in San Antonio’s health this fall!
