Sponsor Our ArticlesA winter weather advisory has been issued for San Antonio and parts of Central and South Texas, lasting from Friday evening to Saturday morning. Residents should prepare for icy conditions on untreated roads due to expected freezing rain and drizzle. The Texas Department of Transportation is pre-treating major roads for safety. Drivers are urged to avoid travel unless necessary. Community support measures are being implemented for those in need, including temporary shelters. Stay informed and look out for one another during these chilly conditions.
Residents of San Antonio and surrounding areas, brace yourselves! A winter weather advisory has been issued for parts of Central and South Texas, signaling a chilly spell that promises freezing rain and light drizzle, making roads slick and treacherous. The advisory kicks in at 6 p.m. on Friday and will last until 9 a.m. Saturday.
The forecast indicates that drivers can expect icy conditions on the roads, especially on untreated highways, bridges, and overpasses which freeze first. Ice accumulations are likely to be light—around a few hundredths of an inch to a tenth of an inch—but don’t let that fool you. The roads could still be quite hazardous, particularly in northern Bexar County, and parts of Comal and Hays counties.
Seven Texas counties are under this advisory, including Hays, Comal, Bexar, Caldwell, Guadalupe, Wilson, and Gonzales. Affected cities include San Marcos, New Braunfels, Spring Branch, Seguin, and Lockhart.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is on high alert with crews working around the clock to pre-treat major roads, focusing on those elevated surfaces that are the first to freeze. Safety is their top priority, and drivers are urged to slow down, reduce their speed, and give these crews plenty of room to do their work. Remember, safety first, folks!
Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary until temperatures rise above freezing on Saturday morning. Scattered showers and ongoing drizzle are expected throughout Saturday, with daytime high temperatures creeping into the low 40s.
Due to these weather conditions, Northside ISD has canceled or rescheduled after-school events on Friday. However, as of now, Saturday’s events remain unaffected. If you were planning to check out the St. Jude Dream Home Open House, be aware that it will be closed on Saturday but is set to reopen on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
In light of the cold weather, the city of San Antonio is stepping in to provide temporary overnight shelters for those experiencing homelessness. To ensure the well-being of furry friends, Animal Care Services is also providing kennels at shelters for pets.
All encampment abatements have been paused during this cold snap for safety reasons. A designated overnight resilience hub will open at the Northeast Senior Center from 5 p.m. Friday till 10 a.m. Saturday. This hub will offer a warm and safe place to stay, along with basic supplies and charging stations. If you need transportation to the hub, don’t hesitate to call 311.
As we face this chilly weather together, it’s essential to stay informed and take precautions. Keep an eye on the weather updates and ensure you’re prepared for whatever the day brings. Most importantly, look out for one another, and stay warm!
Remember, we’ll get through this together, San Antonio. Stay safe and keep your spirits high!
