San Antonio: A Resolve Against Brain Cancer
Unity, resolve, and love – the guiding principles cementing the bonds of families and friends in San Antonio as they contribute to a noble cause: the Head for the Cure 5K. Initiated in 2014, this annual event is aimed at raising funds and awareness in the critical fight against brain cancer.
Embodying these principles is San Antonio resident David Flores, whose daughter, the radiant and brave Americus Miranda Flores, sadly succumbed to this relentless illness.
Remembering a Joyful Spirit
David Flores fondly remembers his daughter’s spirit. Even in her suffering, young Americus portrayed a vibrant, joyous demeanor that would often uplift those around her, despite their shared pain. Her resilience is a source of inspiration, serving as a testament to her loving persona.
The Cruel Reality of Craniopharyngioma
Diagnosed with an inoperable tumor – craniopharyngioma, Americus Miranda underwent surgery at only 18 months old. Tragically, she passed away at the tender age of five.
Her untimely demise left a void, but her wish to heal others lived on. Americus Miranda’s legacy remains in the hearts of many, especially through the Head for the Cure 5K – a way to ensure her fight was not in vain.
Running for A Cause
Over the past decade, the Flores family and friends have been active participants in the Head for the Cure 5K, not just commemorating Americus Miranda, but also contributing to a vital cause. They run in the hope of alleviating the struggle and ensuring a fighting chance for other young patients and their families grappling with this formidable disease.
“It’s awesome to see her picture and her name on an event like this. It’s just keeping her spirit alive. And if we can keep on raising funds for Head for the Cure, we can see another little kid survive and thrive, it’s worth it,” says a hopeful David Flores.
Supporting Survivors
David has another tie to the cause, his mother, Alicia Avila, a brain cancer survivor. His support extends to her, and every survivor who continues to battle recurring tumors. Describing her as a warrior, he underscores his commitment to making a difference in the lives of families touched by brain cancer.
The Annual Run Returns: Join the Fight
Marking its return, the Head for the Cure 5K is scheduled for Sept. 28, 2024, commencing at 8 a.m. at Providence Catholic School. Registrations are ongoing, and participants can avail a discount by using the code ‘KSAT24’.
