SAWS Introduces New Watering Restrictions in San Antonio: City Council to Vote in June

San Antonio Braces for Changes in Watering Protocols

San Antonio residents will soon have to change their watering habits as the warm summer season approaches. The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) is implementing new restrictions on water usage and enforcing stricter penalties for non-compliance. Further modifications are being considered to address a loophole that currently allows individuals with drip irrigation systems to use more water than those with sprinkler systems.

SAWS has initiated these changes in response to water conservation concerns. The authority states that too many residents are not making sufficient efforts to conserve water. Violation of the existing watering restrictions could result in a $137 citation, depending on the resident’s geographical location.

The proposed changes are set to be voted on by the San Antonio City Council on the 20th of June, 2024.

Understanding Watering Restrictions in San Antonio

The watering restrictions implemented by SAWS are designed to conserve water, particularly during the summer season when usage typically spikes. The restrictions vary based on the four water management levels which are:

  • Year-Round
  • Stages 1 through 3
  • Drought Emergency
    • Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the restrictions that apply to their specific level and adhere to them to prevent penalties.

      Threat to Water Conservation

The current system has a loophole where homeowners with drip irrigation systems can consume more water than those with traditional sprinklers. This inequality has raised serious concerns, prompting SAWS to propose changes to rectify this discrepancy.

The changes are meant to level the playing field, ensuring that all residents abide by the same usage restrictions regardless of their watering method. Compliance with these regulations will not only help conserve water but also prevent residents from incurring penalties.

      A Decision Awaited

Is the change necessary? Will it help conserve water? These are the questions the San Antonio City Council will be considering when voting on the proposed changes on the 20th of June, 2024. This decision is eagerly awaited by residents as it could significantly alter the watering habits of many San Antonians.

To mitigate these proposed changes, residents are urged to start thinking about their daily water usage habits and to consider ways in which they can conserve more water in their homes and gardens. Simple adjustments such as modifying watering schedules, considering drought-resistant plants, and fixing leaking pipes can make a significant difference.
