Applications Open for Scholarship Honoring San Antonio-area Airplane Mechanic

About the Scholarship

In San Antonio, a new scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Zachary Collie-Moreno, a promising young airplane mechanic who tragically died in a plane crash in July 2023. At just 20 years old, Zachary was deeply passionate about aviation and was proud to be part of the Commemorative Air Force Central Texas Wing.

A Tragic Loss

Zachary Collie-Moreno was among the two victims of the crash that occurred near Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, while attending an airshow. His family describes him as someone who always “looked up at the sky” and dreamed of flying since childhood. “He really felt like that was where he was supposed to be,” expressed his mother, Jennifer Greenberg.

Community Support and Fundraising

In response to the tragedy, his family joined forces with the Commemorative Air Force to set up a scholarship fund in Zachary’s memory. Within a year, they successfully raised over $50,000 through the generosity and support of the community. “It was just cool to see so many people come from so many places and want to give something in Zach’s name,” Greenberg said.

Who Can Apply?

The scholarship aims to support individuals who share Zach’s passion for aviation. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate their dedication to the field, ideally showing a desire to be in aviation for both personal fulfillment and professional growth. “That would make us and Zach very proud,” Greenberg added.

Application Details

Currently, there is no set deadline for applications. Interested students can find eligibility criteria and submission information on the scholarship’s official page. This initiative reflects not only Zach’s spirit but also aims to help future aviators in their pursuit of dreams.

Memory of Devyn Reiley

Alongside Zachary, pilot Devyn Reiley was also lost in the crash. While her family is extending a scholarship as well, they have chosen not to comment at this time. Their scholarship page remains open for donations, ensuring her memory is honored too.

Moving Forward

This scholarship stands as a beacon of hope for many aspiring aviation professionals in the San Antonio area, keeping Zachary Collie-Moreno’s memory alive while supporting those who dream of the skies, just as he did.
