SAN ANTONIO – The teaching staff of East Central and Harlandale Independent School Districts got a pleasant surprise to kick-start the new school year. The United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County distributed $40,000 worth of school supplies amongst the teachers. The supplies were delivered in person at a press conference held at Honor Elementary on Tuesday, with assistance from United Way volunteers and the cheerleading and band team of East Central High School.
This benevolent act was part of the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County’s annual Write Start Project. This project is characterized by their commitment to supporting educators and schools in the area by supplementing educational materials and classroom supplies.
Apart from the supplies, Honor Elementary was also granted a Project AWARE federal grant, which will further strengthen its relationship with Communities in Schools of San Antonio. The grant will ensure the provision of mental and behavioral health services within the district for the next five years.
The press conference featured Chris Martin, CEO and President of United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, ECISD Superintendent Roland Toscano, and Jessica Weaver, CEO of Communities in Schools of San Antonio. Their addresses stressed the importance of this initiative and its impact on the educators and students.
The first day of class in the East Central ISD is scheduled for Wednesday. The surprise gift equips the teachers with necessary resources to foster a conducive and productive classroom environment. It reflects a promising start for the new academic year and a concrete step towards enhancing student education in the district.
