San Antonio Braces for the Arrival of the State-of-The-Art “Science One” Building at UT Health

A Boost to Research and Development at UT Health San Antonio

San Antonio city is set for an exciting development this fall. The construction of a cutting-edge laboratory building, known as “Science One“, will commenced on September 30, 2024 at UT Health San Antonio. This new facility comes as a much-needed expansion to support the growing research enterprise at the institution.

Addressing the constraints of the current wet labs

According to Andrea Marks, MBA, CPA, senior executive vice president and chief operating officer, the current research growth at UT Health San Antonio has surpassed the current facilities’ upgrade and expansion capabilities. The Science One will provide the state-of-the-art laboratory space necessary for the flourishing of pioneering research in cancer, diabetes, and aging.

Location and Structure

The Science One building, which will be situated near Floyd Curl and Charles Katz Drive, will boost the institution’s research and healthcare endeavors. The building will be five stories high, encompassing a total of 95,500 square feet. Researchers focusing on the diseases that plague the community the most will use this new laboratory space.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Innovative Breakthroughs

Robert Hromas, MD, FACP, the acting president of UT Health San Antonio, emphasized the institution’s reputation for world-class research in cancer, dementia, aging, and diabetes. The soon-to-be erected Science One Building will house experts from all the aforementioned disciplines, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration to foster innovative ideas. These forward-thinking breakthroughs are expected to not only catalyze economic growth for San Antonio and South Texas but also improve healthcare for patients suffering from these diseases in the region.

The $100 Million Project

The $100 million undertaking is part of a significant expansion strategy aimed at enhancing the university’s patient care services and research missions. The brand-new Science One building will be in good company, joining other newly erected buildings on the northwest side of the campus, such as the soon-to-be completed UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital and the in-progress Center for Health. The latter is slated to open in December 2024 and will harbor both clinical and research space dedicated to the study and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.

Project Timeline

Construction for the Science One building is planned to commence on September 30 and is anticipated to conclude by August 2026, effectively enriching the research environment at UT Health San Antonio.
