Dramatic thunderstorms bringing rain and hail to San Antonio

News Summary

San Antonio experienced severe thunderstorms late Sunday night, providing a much-needed rain to relieve drought conditions. The storms brought hail, strong winds, and swirling rain. While Kerrville faced the brunt of hail, San Antonio managed only minor power outages. Although this rain was a welcome sight, it’s insufficient to improve the extreme drought status that the region continues to face.

Severe Thunderstorms Bring Hail and Rain to San Antonio, Offering Brief Relief from Drought

San Antonio was hit with a dramatic display of thunderstorms late Sunday night, providing a much-needed splash of rain for the parched region. Local residents experienced an exciting rollercoaster of weather, complete with large hail, howling winds, and a sudden downpour, all part of a weather system that swept across the area.

Storm Details and Impacts

As the storm rolled in, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was set for Bexar County and its neighboring areas. Fortunately, the watch expired early as the storm system moved eastward, leaving the worst behind. The powerful weather event did, however, cause some inconveniences, knocking out power for a few hundred customers served by CPS Energy.

Kerrville seemed to be the epicenter of the storm’s fury, with reports of hail falling there that was the size of golf balls or even larger! Not to be outdone, the Hill Country region faced some extreme hail with reports of stones as big as baseballs hitting the ground.

In terms of flooding potential, residents could breathe a sigh of relief as the thunderstorms moved swiftly through the Interstate 25 corridor, minimizing any serious flooding concerns. The storms didn’t linger long enough to cause significant water accumulation, allowing San Antonio to escape a major weather disaster.

Drought Conditions Remain

extreme drought status. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, this is currently the driest level a region can experience.

San Antonio has only recorded 1.71 inches of rain from January to February 2025. To put this in perspective, the historical average for this time period is about 3.7 inches. March had started off on a notably dry note, with only 0.06 inches of rain leading up to Sunday night’s storm change. So while the thunderstorms were a thrilling sight, they couldn’t fully remedy the ongoing drought situation.

Rainfall Totals from Sunday Night

The National Weather Service reported that San Antonio International Airport recorded 0.31 inches of rain on that eventful Sunday night, marking it as the third-wettest day of the year so far. To add to these numbers, San Antonio had already experienced two wetter days earlier in the year, with January 9 seeing 0.82 inches and February 11 garnering 0.36 inches of rainfall.

What’s Next?

It seems the weather isn’t finished with us yet. Local meteorologists had hinted at the possibility of thunderstorms due to a cold front making its way into the area, and they were correct. This system is expected to bring even more moisture over the coming days, so residents should stay alert.

The storm activity was part of a broader weather pattern impacting various parts of Texas, where severe thunderstorms were predicted to continue. A strong low-pressure system is making its presence known and promises more thunderstorms in the days ahead. So, keep those umbrellas handy!

In summary, while the recent storms packed a punch with hail and wind, they provided a much-needed drink for our dry region. Still, it’s not quite enough to classify it as a drought buster just yet. Here’s hoping for more rain on the horizon.
