On Saturday, February 8, at 10 a.m., he and his band, the Vibratones, will hit the stage at HemisFair Park, promising to deliver a unique blend of reggae fusion that will have you dancing your heart out and drinking your coffee with flair!
At 48 years old, Sgt. Remo has taken quite a journey to get where he is today. After moving to El Paso during his high school years, he was introduced to the magical world of reggae music. The genre resonated with him deeply, primarily because of its themes of struggle, hardship, and poverty. Inspired by legendary ’80s dancehall artists like Shabba Ranks and Buju Banton, Sgt. Remo initially explored dancehall and hip-hop before transitioning to the more traditional sounds of reggae.
Sgt. Remo’s journey in music took a pivotal turn while serving in the U.S. Navy. Connecting with friends from Guyana and Jamaica, he discovered his true passion for music. After hanging up his Navy boots in 2014, he settled in San Antonio, where he quickly dove into the local music scene, performing regularly within just a year. At first, his music was fun and club-friendly, but after becoming a father, he began to write songs with a more thoughtful and respectful message.
The Vibratones consists of talented musicians from San Antonio, and Sgt. Remo often shares the stage with his own son, who plays both trumpet and trombone. It’s a true family affair that resonates with many fans who appreciate the blend of personal and musical ties. His vocal style, infused with a unique form of toasting akin to rap, encapsulates his rich experiences and influences.
Realizing the power of music, Sgt. Remo sees himself as an ambassador for reggae culture. His mission? To spread a positive message through beautifully crafted tunes. He actively champions other artists on his YouTube channel, which features recordings from both his label, King Remo Music, and emerging talent. Not one to slow down, he also hosts a weekly show, “Reggae Sessions Radio”, on 90.1 KSYM-FM every Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. Recently, he started curating a reggae show for KPSARadio.com, expanding his reach and sharing the love for reggae even further.
With a busy schedule that reflects his dedication to bringing reggae to a wider audience, Sgt. Remo also owns a thriving screen-printing company and operates a custom sound system.
