In San Antonio, Texas, a sudden downpour on Tuesday morning took many residents by surprise, leading to chaos on the streets. Traffic was halted as at least ten vehicles were caught in a torrent of water along a stretch of N. New Braunfels Avenue between Austin Highway and Eisenhauer Road.
One local man documented his frightening experience on video, showing his SUV partially submerged with water reaching the windows. He shared the video with the community after being rescued by firefighters. Other drivers were not as lucky, with some stranded and forced to wait for tow trucks as the water levels rose.
Chris Mabry, who manages a nearby car care shop, witnessed the situation from his storefront. “Normally we see flooding during heavy rains, but yesterday was something else,” Mabry noted. His shop was nearly affected by the high water level, prompting an influx of customers facing water-related vehicle issues. “The water damages the undercarriage and can rip out some splash guards,” he explained.
Residents familiar with the area are no strangers to flooding, with many voicing their frustrations on social media. Jeff Spear, a local driver, shared his own troubles: “I remember getting caught in a similar situation a couple of years ago on my way to a concert.” Community members are left questioning when relief from this recurring issue will come.
Both the San Antonio and Alamo Heights public works departments were contacted to address concerns raised on social media. Officials stated that the unexpected volume of rain overwhelmed the existing drainage systems in the area.
City crews were seen removing debris, including overturned trash bins and garbage, which had made their way onto N. New Braunfels Avenue and into drainage systems. Frank Orta, the public works director for Alamo Heights, indicated that the debris contributed significantly to the flooding.
According to Nicholas Oliver, a spokesperson for San Antonio’s Department of Public Works, there are currently two bond projects aimed at improving the area’s drainage situation. One project focuses on conducting an extensive drainage study, while the other is in the design phase. However, it appears that this design project does not have a definitive completion date.
As the community reflects on the chaotic events that transpired, many residents are advocating for faster action and improved infrastructure to prevent future flooding from causing such disruption. With heavy rains likely to persist, the urgency for a solution becomes even more pressing.
