This summer has been quite eventful for the television news industry in San Antonio. From heartfelt farewells to exciting new beginnings, the local broadcasting landscape has seen a variety of changes. Here’s a roundup of the most notable shifts making headlines.
In May, six respected broadcasters announced their retirement from KSAT, marking the end of an era. Mark Austin, Mike Osterhage, Ursula Pari, David Sears, Jessie Degollado, and Marilyn Moritz revealed they would officially wrap up their broadcasts on July 1. While there were rumors about forced departures from buyouts, station management confirmed that the exits were voluntary. During a series of special segments, each broadcaster expressed their deep connections to the community and their plans for retirement.
KENS 5 welcomed Earl Stoudemire in July as a new multimedia journalist. Based in the morning slot, Stoudemire aims to connect with viewers after his previous stint at FOX 44 in Waco. His diverse background is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the news team.
Also returning home is Zaria Oates, a proud Clemens High School alumna, who joined KSAT’s Nightbeat in June. Oates expressed her dedication to reporting on important issues in her community, excited to make a positive impact in the city she loves.
In July, SA Live announced some on-air changes, revealing that Jen Tobias-Struski would co-host alongside Fiona Gorostiza, taking over from Mike Osterhage. Tobias-Struski is returning to her roots, having started her broadcasting journey with SA Live in 2015.
Additionally, Jada Pickett is joining the SA Live team as a full-time reporter, having previously contributed to several segments. Her presence is expected to bring a new flair to the lifestyle show.
In August, Amanda Henderson, a reporter from News 4 San Antonio/FOX 29, announced her departure for a reporting position at KHOU in Houston. With gratitude for her time in San Antonio, she aims to continue her career close to home.
August also saw some major shifts in the morning lineup at KSAT, with Stephanie Serna moving to the 9 a.m. slot on Good Morning San Antonio. Her replacement for the early morning show is Japhanie Gray, who is returning to the anchor desk, paired with RJ Marquez and meteorologist Justin Horne. The team also welcomes a new reporter, Devan Karp, who brings enthusiasm and familiarity as a former intern at the station.
Amid all the excitement, KSAT bid farewell to longtime reporter Tiffany Huertas, who left the station after seven years to work with the communications team at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her departure highlights the ongoing shifts within local media and the opportunities beyond television.
San Antonio’s TV news has never looked more dynamic, with a mix of retirements and fresh faces bringing new energy to the airwaves. As audiences adjust to these transitions, there is a sense of anticipation for what’s next in local broadcasting.
