The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) launched its latest Innovation Invitational Showcase today at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio. The event attracted transportation leaders from across Texas, intent on presenting their pioneering tech and projects.
Paco Felici, from Port San Antonio, shared exciting plans that could potentially transform San Antonio into a hub for futuristic aircraft. The ambitious proposals include the development of a ‘vertiport’ – a new kind of airport designed to accommodate both traditional fixed-wing aircraft and the next generation of urban air transport.
“A vertiport is a special kind of airport that will host both traditional fixed-wing aircraft, but is also the next generation of urban air transportation, which is electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles. And if that sounds like a mouthful, simply call them flying cars or flying taxis,” Felici explained.
Felici continued, suggesting that the new mode of transportation could relieve traffic congestion by offering commuters an alternative to car travel. “That would be tremendous savings and that will make our roadways more efficient,” Felici said.
The TxDOT Innovation Invitational Showcase brought together a diverse array of some of the most state-of-the-art tech in transportation. This included autonomous vehicles and drones, providing a glimpse into the future of transport.
The event, open and free to the public until 4 p.m., offers an opportunity to learn more about these groundbreaking technologies and to engage directly with the experts driving these developments.
Events like the TxDOT Innovation Invitational Showcase indicate a clear commitment by transport leaders to pursuing innovative and efficient transport solutions. It’s a vital opportunity for collaboration and advancement in a world increasingly reliant on sustainable and effective transportation systems.
