San Antonio is buzzing with excitement as the well-known Terry Black’s BBQ unveils its updated design plans for a prime piece of property along the Broadway corridor. Located at 2100 Broadway, this development promises to be a culinary and hospitality hub, featuring a restaurant, hotel, spa, and even an underground parking facility.
The journey to this point has involved navigating various city reviews, but recent developments are promising. The city has green-lighted a zoning change that paves the way for the hotel construction. This aspect of the project faced scrutiny, particularly from Alamo Colleges District, which expressed concern regarding potential smoke emissions from the BBQ restaurant impacting local air quality. However, representatives from Terry Black’s BBQ assured council members that they will install a smoke scrubber if any air quality complaints arise.
District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has been a vocal supporter of the development. He emphasized that the presence of a nearby hotel would ensure that the restaurant is motivated to address any smoke issues, thus protecting the neighborhood’s air quality. Construction scheduling and specific design details about the hotel remain under wraps, as plans were submitted late last year for a three-story hotel – a height permitted by the recent zoning changes.
The plans are set to be discussed at the Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) meeting on September 4, at which time final approvals will be sought. The project architects, Chioco Design LLC from Austin, are crafting a vision that aligns with both city aesthetics and functional needs.
As the neighborhood waits for updates, excitement grows over the potential for this project to enhance the area’s appeal. While a definitive timeline for construction has yet to be announced, the community looks forward to welcoming this new addition that promises to blend dining with relaxation and leisure.
