Austin, Texas – People in the Lone Star State have reason to celebrate! The latest data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that Texas has plowed ahead with a significant leap in job creation, leading the nation by a substantial margin. With a net increase of 284,200 jobs, the state sets records, leaving the competition trailing far behind.
For those keeping score, California came in second with an increase of 180,500 jobs, while Florida followed suit by adding 147,900 jobs. In total, 33 states experienced growth in nonfarm payroll employment, while 17 states and the District of Columbia saw no change. It seems Texas is not just leading; it’s setting a blazing pace!
To put this into perspective, Texas’s employment growth rate of 2.0% over the past year has eclipsed California’s 1.0% and Florida’s 1.5%. However, as the state enjoys strong job growth, the unemployment rate did rise slightly to 4.2% from 3.9% the previous year. What’s behind this? A booming labor pool! In fact, Texas added an impressive 445,300 workers, leaving California in the dust with only 57,300 additions.
The average American might wonder, is a 4% unemployment rate bad? Not at all! Economists often see around 4% as the sweet spot for full employment. It’s a healthy measure allowing for job mobility and flexibility. Conversely, some states are feeling tight spots in the labor market, like South Dakota and Vermont, which boast lower unemployment figures of 1.9% and 2.4%, respectively. On the flip side, states such as Nevada, California, and Illinois are grappling with higher rates at 5.7%, 5.5%, and 5.2%.
Many areas throughout Texas have become sinews of tight labor markets, attracting a wave of workers looking for better opportunities. While the state’s population growth may seem to have leveled off in many regions, Texas’s younger demographic with higher birth rates contributes to a vibrant workforce. This is an attribute that Texas leaders are keen to cultivate through quality education and training programs aimed at meeting the demands of evolving technology.
By December 2024, Texas proudly reported its largest labor force at a whopping 15,575,900 and the highest number of employed individuals at 14,922,200. The state achieved an all-time high of 14,318,700 nonfarm jobs. Since the arrival of its current leadership in 2015, Texas has added over 2.5 million jobs, reflecting outstanding progress in its economic landscape.
As Texas moves toward an even brighter future, its bottom-line industries are taking center stage. Notably, the Professional and Business Services sector has been a powerhouse for job creation, adding 17,800 new positions just in the last month alone. This is a clear indicator of Texas’s thriving business environment, which is bolstered by strong government and business partnerships.
While Texas maintains a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.1%, slightly above the national average, it drops to an even more encouraging 3.7% when not adjusted. However, the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area is facing challenges with a not seasonally adjusted rate of 6.2%.
