Texas Small Businesses in Action
Texas is thriving with over 3 million small businesses, vital to the state’s economy, employing nearly half of all working Texans. While challenges like capital access and regulations exist, initiatives like the Ignite program and House Bill 9 are designed to support small enterprises. With a projected cost-saving of $1 billion in credit card swipe fees and increased healthcare access through Texicare, the future remains promising for Texas entrepreneurs.
In the wide expanses of the Lone Star State, there exists a remarkable pulse of economic activity driven by over 3 million small businesses. These vibrant enterprises are not just the backbone of local economies; they employ nearly half of all working Texans. Their contributions go far beyond job creation, playing a crucial role in fostering innovation, boosting exports, and enriching community life.
Fast forward to 2023, and Texas has emerged as a giant in the economic arena, with its economy valued at a whopping $2.6 trillion. This puts Texas among the top players globally, currently holding the title of the eighth-largest economy in the world, outpacing powerhouses like Russia, Canada, and Italy. Talk about impressive!
However, the reality for small businesses in Texas isn’t all sunshine and blue skies. These entities face a multitude of hurdles, from accessing capital to navigating a maze of complex regulations. Competing with larger corporations is yet another challenge that can feel like David versus Goliath.
Recognizing these challenges, the Foundation for Better Business has taken the initiative to lend a helping hand to small businesses. By offering essential business education and growth tools, they are determined to help these enterprises not just survive but thrive.
Moreover, there’s an exciting new program making waves—the Ignite program, sparked by Better Business. This small business accelerator is crafted to enhance long-term success for Texas’ small businesses, aiming to turn the tide on the statistic that only 50% of small businesses survive beyond five years. With concentrated resources and support, Ignite is paving the way for sustainable success.
In a further move to strengthen the support networks for these businesses, House Bill 9 has been introduced to alleviate some tax burdens. This bill proposes to exempt the first $250,000 of business personal property from taxation, significantly raising the current exemption from a mere $2,500. This change could save business owners time and money, allowing them to skip the annual report to the appraisal district if their tangible property is worth less than the exemption amount.
However, implementing the bill is not without consequences. The Legislative Budget Board anticipates it will cost the state around $566 million in general revenue-related funds over the next biennium. Still, the potential benefits for small businesses in reducing their paperwork burdens and freeing up resources for growth are undeniable.
Healthcare access is another pressing concern. Over 68% of small businesses in Texas do not provide health care coverage to their employees. Thankfully, Texicare has stepped up with a generous $240 million investment from Texas Mutual aimed at expanding affordable health care options. Their focus is on user-friendly benefits, envisioning zero co-payment primary care visits and specialist coverage to enhance healthcare access for Texas workers.
To top things off, ongoing legislative efforts aim to tackle the financial strain of credit card swipe fees on sales taxes and tips. Senate Bill 2026 and House Bill 4124 are in the works, with the potential to save businesses an astounding $1 billion annually. Many small and mid-sized businesses find these swipe fees to be a hefty burden, often diverting funds that could otherwise be reinvested into the local community.
In 2023, small businesses in Texas faced over $1 billion in swipe fees on sales taxes—a staggering number. With supporters rallying around legislative change, there’s hope for a brighter financial future for small enterprises across the state. As these businesses continue to provide vital jobs and emotional connections within communities, their resilience and adaptability are essential to the ever-evolving Texas economy.
The strength of Texas is its small businesses, and with initiatives underway to provide the necessary support and resources, the future looks promising for entrepreneurs and their communities alike.
