The Hottest New Bars and Restaurants in San Antonio in 2024

Sunny San Antonio has seen a burst of culinary creativity in 2024, with a hotbed of new exciting eateries and watering holes springing up amongst its vibrant food scene. The city teems with new locations that stand out for their innovation, ambience, and of course, delectable offerings that cater to appetites big or small.

Hook Land & Sea

First on our list is the seafood restaurant, Hook Land & Sea. Situated in the new mixed-use development The Creamery, Hook Land & Sea opened its doors in January and has been making waves ever since. The menu boasts Asian-inspired dishes among other exciting fusion cuisine, matching the anticipation that its name stirs.

Amelia Social Lounge

The following month, February, saw the grand opening of Amelia Social Lounge. Also nestled in The Creamery, it combines a stylish interior with an extensive wine list and classic cocktails. Celebratory small plates of citrus-cured smoked salmon and roasted dates top off the decadent experience.

Maíz

In March Maíz sprung onto the culinary scene. Located near the intersection of Loop 1604 and Hardy Oak Boulevard, it is the fruit of Chef-owner Maricela Rangel Trujillo’s passion. A unique breakfast, lunch, and dinner offering, Maíz is where old meets new and history meets flavor.

Ay Que Chula

Ay Que Chula is a vibrant and energetic nightspot that made its debut at the tail-end of 2023 in the city’s LGBTQ+ nightlife district, Main Strip. Behind it is Ricky Ortiz, the brain behind El Camino and Bésame food-truck parks.

Freight Fried Chicken

Defining the dawn of 2024 was the opening of Freight Fried Chicken. Drawing upon historical inspirations, Chef Nicola Blaque introduced this fried chicken concept to the Pearl’s Bottling Department food hall. The restaurant honors Black women who sold food to rail passengers during the post-Civil War era in Gordonsville, Virginia.

Full Belly Cafe + Bar and Mi Gente

Brunch spot Full Belly Cafe + Bar and Latin-infused Mi Gente have ushered in their own unique flavors. While Full Belly Cafe + Bar opened a new location serving brunch and lunch dishes, Mi Gente took over Martha’s Mexican Restaurant, serving revamped classic dishes.

Burger Boy

Local chain Burger Boy hit the scene with its seventh stop in front of South Park Mall in January, sparking a burger revolution on the South Side.

Hops & Hounds

A pleasant surprise for canine lovers is Hops & Hounds, which reestablished itself in a spacious new location along the Museum Reach stretch of the River Walk in February. The dog-friendly beer garden and bar, with a large outdoor space, is perfect for relaxed afternoons.

Greenhouse

Slated for popularity, Greenhouse, positions itself in Olmos Park with gourmet coffees and a gluten-free menu. A collaborative work of Mixtli Progressive Mexican co-owners Rico Torres, Diego Galicia, and Mixtli chef de cuisine Alexana Cabrera, it’s a promising spot for caffeine lovers.

And that’s just a smattering of the culinary delights that 2024 has brought San Antonio so far. Cheers to an exciting year ahead!
