Good morning, San Antonio! It’s a warm day here in South Texas, and while we hear chatter about Tropical Storm Francine making its way toward Louisiana, many of us are curious about what kind of impact it will have on our weather. Let’s dive into the details so you know what to expect today and beyond.
As of 1 p.m. on Wednesday, the rotating center of Francine is heading towards the Louisiana coastline, which is almost 400 miles away from our beloved San Antonio. While it might seem like a distant storm, it’s essential to understand how these tropical situations can affect our local weather pattern.
Good news for San Antonio residents! The majority of rain associated with Francine is going to stay well to the east of us. In fact, we can expect high moisture levels in the atmosphere, which could bring a few clouds our way in the early hours. After experiencing three straight days with morning lows of 70 degrees or cooler, expect today’s temperatures to drop a bit higher—around 73 to 74 degrees.
With San Antonio sitting on the west side of the storm, we’re fortunate to be on the dry side of Francine. This means that today’s forecast looks bright and beautiful with mostly sunny skies! By noon, we can expect the temperature to be around the mid-80s, eventually climbing to a cozy low 90s by the afternoon.
Along with the rising temperatures, the higher moisture levels and dew points near 70 degrees will cause the heat index to feel a tad warmer, reaching values between 94 to 97 degrees. So, don’t forget to drink plenty of water and take breaks if you’re heading out!
Even though the chance of rain here in San Antonio remains under 10%, a rogue shower from the outer bands of Francine can’t be completely written off. It’s always best to keep an umbrella handy just in case! As for the winds, we should expect light breezes coming from the north around 10 mph, with gusts potentially hitting up to 20 mph.
For those farther east, particularly areas stretching from Galveston to Beaumont, the potential for significant rainfall is more pronounced. They’re looking at rain totals of over an inch in some areas! By the end of Thursday, Francine is expected to move up toward Arkansas, Tennessee, and Missouri, leaving behind a forgotten trail of moisture.
As Francine departs, a weak system of high atmospheric pressure will settle over Texas, leading to more sunny days and rising temperatures. Thursday temperatures could peak in the mid-90s, and by Friday, we may even see the mercury rise to between 96 and 98 degrees, which is about five degrees above the typical temperatures for early September!
For early next week, keep an eye out as long-range models hint at a weak atmospheric disturbance and some tropical moisture trying to make its way in from the eastern Pacific. While it isn’t expected to shake things up much, it might help bring our temperatures closer to the average and give us a slight sprinkle of rain.
So there you have it, folks! Today’s weather might just be the perfect excuse to grab a cool drink and enjoy the sunshine. Let’s keep watching the skies, stay hydrated, and embrace the lovely September warmth!
