San Antonio Sets Record for Largest Turkey Giveaway Ever, Aiming to Benefit 1,500 Families this Thanksgiving

San Antonio Gears Up for Largest Turkey Giveaway in History

As the Thanksgiving season approaches, the vibrant city of San Antonio is preparing for what promises to be the most significant turkey giveaway seen to date. This heartwarming initiative is being organized by the local nonprofit Gospel Vision Music Ministry, and their ambitious goal is to distribute up to 1,500 turkeys to families in need this holiday season.

A Legacy of Giving

The driving force behind this noble venture is Reverend James Robinson, who has taken on the responsibility of continuing his late mother’s remarkable legacy. His mother, Verna Mae “Mama” Boone, who passed away in 2009, was a community hero in San Antonio. For an impressive 50 years, Mama Boone dedicated herself to feeding the homeless, often setting up her operations under the overpass at Interstate 35 and Durango Street, now known as César E. Chávez Boulevard.

Eager to honor his mother’s commitment, Robinson has made it his mission to ensure that Mama Boone’s spirit of generosity lives on. Whenever there’s a pressing need in the community, you can bet that Robinson is busy planning a giveaway. Over the years, he and a group of committed volunteers have handed out school supplies, food boxes, and even essential items during the challenging times of the pandemic for those who lacked access.

Making a Difference in Education

For an impressive 21 years, Robinson has led another rewarding initiative: a back-to-school school supply giveaway that has immensely benefited kids in the east side community. Through Gospel Vision Music Ministry, they have served over 1.5 million children since this important event kicked off. With all this positive momentum, Robinson is hoping that 2024 will be another milestone year for the organization.

Excitement for the Turkey Giveaway

The highly anticipated turkey giveaway is set to take place on November 23 at Comanche Park. Robinson’s goal is clear: to hand out as many as 1,500 turkeys along with all the accompanying fixings, thanks to the generous support of the San Antonio Food Bank. “I just want to be a blessing to our city,” Robinson expressed with excitement.

A Day of Community and Camaraderie

To make the event even more festive and community-oriented, local law enforcement agencies will participate in distributing turkeys. Starting at 10 a.m., police departments from all around San Antonio, including Balcones Heights, Windcrest, Castle Hills, and Leon Valley, will take turns handing out each turkey. They’ll work in 30-minute increments to ensure everything runs smoothly and that every family gets what they need.

In addition to the turkey distribution, attendees will also be treated to a display featuring an antique fire truck, an antique police car, and an impressive lineup of 25 low riders at Comanche Park. It’s not just about the turkeys; it’s a chance for the community to come together and celebrate, while also showing appreciation for local first responders who will be present with food for their team.

Getting Involved

For those interested in helping make this event a success, there’s still an opportunity to get involved! Individuals can reach out to Robinson directly via email or phone. Sponsorships are welcome and can make a lasting difference in the lives of families during this time of giving.

The turkey giveaway will start at 10 a.m. and will continue until every turkey is handed out. It’s set to be a wonderful day filled with kindness, celebration, and an overwhelming sense of community spirit. Make sure to mark your calendars for this special event and join in spreading joy this Thanksgiving!
