The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved this merger last year, setting the stage for a single institution that will serve nearly 40,000 students and employ about 16,000 staff across six campuses. The ambitious plan aims to finalize by September 1, pending the accreditation seal of approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The contributions of Dr. Robert Hromas, who has served as the acting president since March 2024, will continue in the capacity of dean of the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.
