With an exciting doubleheader against Central Michigan and Tennessee State, fans can expect thrilling matchups throughout the weekend, including rivalries against Samford and Troy. The Mean Green aims to build on last season’s success with a fresh roster featuring 11 newcomers and a strong returning core. Anticipation is high as the community rallies behind the team in what promises to be an exhilarating season.
As the sun rises over Denton, a wave of excitement is sweeping through the University of North Texas as the softball team gears up for a thrilling start to the 2025 season. The action kicks off this Friday at the much-anticipated Trojan Classic where fans can look forward to an exhilarating doubleheader.
The Mean Green will jump straight into action against Central Michigan with the first pitch set to fly at 9 a.m. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite for softball, grab a quick snack because the second game of the day will follow closely at 11:30 a.m., featuring a showdown with Tennessee State.
The excitement doesn’t stop there! The weekend is lined up with even more games. On Saturday, the team will face off against Samford and Troy. Notably, Saturday’s game against Troy marks the 31st meeting between these two teams. The last time they clashed was back on May 10, 2013, when UNT emerged victorious with a 5-2 score in the Sun Belt Conference Championship elimination game.
Fans might be interested to know that Troy ranks among UNT’s 10th-most common opponents, alongside teams like Oklahoma and UTEP. Currently, UNT leads the all-time series against Troy with a close score of 16-14. Despite their lengthy history, it’s interesting to note that this will be the first time UNT has played against Central Michigan, Samford, or Tennessee State.
As the Mean Green steps into the fray, it will be their second season within the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Last year, the team put on a stellar performance, finishing third in the regular season and making it to the semifinals of the AAC Championship. For the upcoming season, the coaches in The American preseason poll have ranked UNT to finish third again, standing just two points behind last year’s co-champion, Florida Atlantic. Excitingly, UNT secured three first-place votes, showcasing the confidence others have in this dynamic team.
One of the most thrilling aspects of this season is the addition of new talent! Under the guidance of head coach Rodney DeLong, the team welcomes a staggering 11 newcomers to the roster, comprising eight freshmen and three transfers. This represents the second-largest influx of new players in the program’s 26-year history. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how this new mix of players will gel and enhance the team’s performance.
Among the returning players, fans can look forward to performances from all-conference stars like Skylar Savage, Cierra Simon, and two-time AAC Pitcher of the Week, Mackenzie Childers. Their experience and talent will be invaluable as the team embarks on this exciting journey.
As the 2025 season unfolds, there’s no doubt fans will rally behind the Mean Green with gusto. With thrilling matchups set on the horizon and a team bursting with energy and fresh talent, the excitement is palpable. So whether you’re heading to the Trojan Classic or cheering from afar, let’s show support for our UNT softball team as they embark on this adventure!
