Sponsor Our ArticlesThe University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Weston Urban are collaborating to revitalize downtown San Antonio, focusing on historic renovations and new developments along San Pedro Creek. Their efforts include restoring the former Continental Hotel and constructing a high-rise with modern apartments and retail space. Additionally, UTSA is developing the San Pedro II facility to foster innovation and education. This partnership aims to create affordable housing options while enhancing the urban landscape, benefiting both the university and the community.
Welcome to San Antonio, where the buzz of construction and the promise of new opportunities are taking center stage! In an initiative that’s all about revitalizing our beloved downtown, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Weston Urban are making some significant waves along the picturesque San Pedro Creek. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let’s dive into the details of this fantastic collaboration!
First on the list of exciting updates is Weston Urban’s ambitious plan to renovate three historic buildings while constructing a stunning high-rise right in the heart of the block bounded by Commerce, Dolorosa, and Laredo streets. The developers are rolling up their sleeves to give a facelift to the former Continental Hotel, an architectural gem that dates back to 1896. This historic building, which has stood vacant since 2016, is poised for rejuvenation and it’s about time!
This renovation isn’t just about sprucing things up for aesthetic purposes; it aims to create a vibrant urban living atmosphere that attracts UTSA students, faculty, and local employees from surrounding businesses. The high-rise will be home to 290 modern apartments, catering to those looking for convenience and style. But wait, there’s more! The ground floors of the Continental Hotel and another historical gem, the Arana building, are set to offer around 15,000 square feet of retail space. Just think of the shopping and dining possibilities filling the streets!
Right across from Weston Urban’s development, UTSA is making strides with its own project: the highly anticipated San Pedro II. This new facility will host programs in business, computer engineering, hardware and software development, and even cutting-edge research facilities. Set to complete this fall, it will become a hub for innovation right in the heart of an urban renaissance.
The apartment complex isn’t the only project featuring a sprinkle of history. Weston Urban is also restoring the Melchor de la Garza house, which played a crucial role during the Texas Revolution as the headquarters of the Texian Army. It’s great to see that history is being preserved while ushering in a new chapter for the area! The Arana building, constructed in 1926, is also part of the transformative plans, now being repurposed for office space and more retail options.
With such significant growth comes a commitment to community. The high-rise project has been granted a full property tax exemption on the condition that at least half of the apartments will be kept affordable for residents earning below the area median income. This is a promising sign that the revitalization efforts are keeping inclusiveness at heart!
With both the San Pedro II building and Weston Urban’s high-rise on a fast track, the downtown area is buzzing with anticipation. The expected completion for both projects will be a solid boost for UTSA’s strategic expansion in San Antonio, enhancing the university’s presence and influence downtown.
As construction progresses, it’s safe to say that we’re on the cusp of seeing a truly transformed neighborhood. Not only will these developments provide essential housing and commercial spaces, but they’ll also create a vibrant community atmosphere that reflects the spirit of San Antonio and its growing student population.
So, whether you’re a resident, a student, or simply a fan of San Antonio, keep your eyes peeled because this ongoing transformation is just getting started. Who knows what exciting opportunities lie ahead as we continue to build an amazing urban environment together!
