Uvalde County Border Patrol Checkpoint Honors Fallen Agent with New Name

Uvalde County Border Patrol Checkpoint Renamed in Honor of Fallen Agent

In a heartfelt tribute, a Border Patrol checkpoint in Uvalde County is set to carry the name of James Ray Dominguez, a dedicated Border Patrol agent who tragically lost his life almost eleven years ago. The checkpoint will now officially be known as the James R. Dominguez Border Patrol Checkpoint, a decision solidified by the recent passage of the James R. Dominguez Memorial Act.

Remembering Agent Dominguez

Agent Dominguez, born in the vibrant city of San Antonio, dedicated over a decade of service to the Border Patrol. On July 19, 2012, while bravely clearing debris from a section of Highway 90 near Cline, he was fatally struck by a passing vehicle. His untimely death left a significant void in the lives of his family, including his beloved wife and four children. They, along with countless others, remember him not just as an officer, but as a devoted husband and father.

A Significant Legislative Move

The James R. Dominguez Memorial Act was introduced by U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales and recently signed into law by President Joe Biden. The legislation not only honors Dominguez’s legacy but also underscores the bipartisan support surrounding the initiative. This bill received a warm welcome from a group of Texas congressional representatives, including Reps. Henry Cuellar, Colin Allred, and Vicente Gonzalez. Each of them recognized the importance of remembering a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for his community and country.

A Journey to Recognition

The journey toward this significant naming began last year in the House, where it was first introduced before passing in May 2024. The Senate later approved it in November, reflecting a strong collective effort to commemorate Dominguez’s service. As Rep. Gonzales tweeted last month, “Agent Dominguez’s legacy will live on. We are forever grateful for his service to our nation.” A sentiment echoed by his colleagues in Congress, highlighting a rare moment of unity in today’s political climate.

A Tribute to Service

Renaming the checkpoint is just one way to honor the memory of Agent Dominguez and recognize the risks that Border Patrol agents face daily. His story serves as a reminder of the commitment these individuals have for protecting their communities and ensuring safety at the borders. It’s an emotional testament to the lives lost in the line of duty, as well as a nod to the ongoing sacrifices that members of the Border Patrol continue to make.

Looking Forward

The naming of the James R. Dominguez Border Patrol Checkpoint will not only ensure that his story is passed down through generations, but it also fosters a sense of pride and remembrance within the local community. As they pass through the checkpoint, drivers will now recall the significant contributions made by Agent Dominguez and reflect on the noble path he chose.

As we reflect on his life and service, the hope is that the memory of Agent James Ray Dominguez lives on, inspiring future generations to honor their commitments to service, whether that be in law enforcement or any other field that serves the community. His dedication and sacrifice remind us all of the importance of unity, respect, and gratitude.
