Warm Holidays Ahead for San Antonio: Dreaming of a White Christmas?
Hey there, San Antonio! With the holiday season swirling around us like a festive dance, many of you are probably thinking, “Will we get a white Christmas this year?” Unfortunately, it seems that the answer is a big, cheerful “no.” That’s right! Our beautiful city is set to bask in warm and mild weather this Christmas, leaving any dreams of snowflakes and snowmen in the dust.
No Snowflakes in Sight
As we look towards Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, expected temperatures are likely to be near 70 degrees during the day, and around 50 or 60 degrees in the evenings. For us here in San Antonio, a high of 63 degrees is the average for Christmas, meaning we’ll be enjoying warmer-than-normal temperatures once again this year.
Now, if you’re holding onto hope for a snowy surprise, brace yourself for the facts: the chance of having a white Christmas—defined as at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas morning—stands at a staggering 0.10%. To put that into perspective, it’s like rolling a 1 on a 1,000-sided die, or cracking open a dozen eggs to find one that has a double yolk. So, while it’s not entirely impossible for us to wake up to a winter wonderland, let’s just say it’s highly unlikely. In fact, since weather records began in 1885, San Antonio has never officially had a white Christmas!
Let’s Take a Walk Down Memory Lane
While we’re dreaming of snowflakes, let’s recall a bit of Christmas history in Texas. In 2004, some lucky folks in Corpus Christi and Victoria experienced a miraculous Christmas with a foot of snow! Oh, what a sight that must have been! Unfortunately for us in San Antonio, our chances haven’t changed much over the years.
Digging into the data, the coldest Christmas on record occurred in 1983, when temperatures plummeted with a low of just 11 degrees and a high barely hitting 30. Now that’s chilly! And, not so long ago, just two years ago in 2022, we had a low of 22 and a high of 50. Talk about a frosty holiday!
The Warmest and Most Memorable
On the other hand, in 1955, San Antonio celebrated the warmest Christmas on record—with the temperature soaring to a toasty 90 degrees. We all want those cozy holiday vibes, but maybe not with that kind of heat!
So, while many of us dream of that ideal winter landscape with snow-covered trees and cozy fires, here in San Antonio, it looks like we’ll be enjoying the holiday season under a warm sun sans snowflakes.
