Warm October Ahead for San Antonio: What to Expect

Hey there, San Antonio! As we welcome October, many of us are looking forward to the beautiful fall weather that the season typically brings. But hold onto your hats! This month may not be quite as cool as we hoped. Let’s dive in and see what the weather forecast has in store for us!

September’s Sizzling Wrap-Up

First, let’s take a quick look back at September. It started off fairly cool, with the first nine days having high temperatures below 90 degrees. However, since September 10th, things took a turn, and the heat was on with daily highs reaching at least 90 degrees! In fact, by the end of the month, we averaged a steamy 93.8 degrees, which is nearly 4 degrees above normal for this time of year.

We’re all grateful that October is finally here, as it represents a transitional period between the hot summer and the chilling winter. During this month, we typically see average temperatures in San Antonio drop by about 9.9 degrees, making it the largest decrease of any month. But with the latest forecasts in hand, the question on everyone’s minds is: how cool will it really get?

What Do the Models Say?

Long-term weather models, including the American GEFS and the ECMWF, paint a warm picture for Texas this October. The GEFS model projects we will see temperatures ranging from 2 to 4 degrees above average in South Texas. Meanwhile, the ECMWF goes even further, predicting a temperature increase of about 4 to 6 degrees above average!

The Climate Prediction Center backs this up with solid confidence, indicating a strong likelihood of above-average temperatures across the state. Specifically for San Antonio, there’s a 76% chance that we’ll experience temperatures at or above the average. Yet, they also remind us there’s still a 24% chance we could see below-average temperatures. It’s a slim possibility, but always good to keep in mind!

Cold Fronts and Freezes

Despite some weak cold fronts flowing through South Texas recently, we have yet to experience a strong cold front – which typically drops temperatures by at least 15 degrees. Historically speaking, San Antonio’s average first strong cold front usually hits around the middle of October. However, it can sometimes be pushed as far back as November before we really feel that chill. So, if you’re wondering when to break out your winter coat, you may have to hold off a little longer!

Interestingly, historical weather records show that San Antonio rarely experiences freezing temperatures during October. In fact, we’ve only dipped down to freezing (32 degrees or lower) twice in October since records began in 1885 – once in 1917 and again in 1993! Typically, our average first freeze doesn’t occur until November 30th. Central and South Texas see a slightly earlier freeze, particularly in the Hill Country, where it arrives in early to mid-November.
