In the vibrant city of San Antonio, a special sanctuary is buzzing with life and love for animals in need. Petri’s Place, a wildlife rehab center nestled on the southeast side, is dedicated to helping our local furry, feathery, and sometimes scaly friends who find themselves orphaned or in distress. Under the guidance of Executive Director Tina Davis, this amazing facility works hard to ensure these creatures get a second chance.
So, what exactly does Petri’s Place do? It’s pretty simple! “We take in the wildlife that you would find in your own backyard,” Davis explains. Often, these animals are discovered by caring members of the community who come across them while enjoying their homes or gardens. Can you believe that 90% of the animals here were found by the public? That’s a huge number!
At Petri’s Place, you might encounter all sorts of critters—think raccoons, skunks, and opossums. Now, we’ve all heard the negative chatter around opossums, haven’t we? They might not win a beauty contest, but Davis sets the record straight. “They catch and eat cockroaches and other bugs. Mice and rats, and they’re impervious to snake venom,” she shares enthusiastically. Imagine having these quirky animals in our backyards helping us maintain pest control!
Before you let stereotypes dictate your feelings, here’s an adorable tidbit about opossums—when frightened, they play dead! Yes, you read that right! “When they get too scared, they have a seizure and pass out and play dead,” Davis chuckles. Aren’t they just the quirkiest friends to have around? They might not look like it, but having opossums nearby could be a blessing for your backyard ecosystem.
Once animals are nursed back to health and prepared for independence, Petri’s Place carefully releases them back into the wild. This could mean sending them back to their original homes or even to new spots! “We do take the animals to property owners that have requested specific species because they are looking for pest control there,” says Davis. Some critters even get a second lease on life in the local parks.
If you stumble upon a wildlife situation that needs addressing, Petri’s Place is not the only option. It’s vital to know where to turn for help! Davis mentions there’s a list of “rehabbers” published by Texas Parks and Wildlife which is readily available by county. This makes it easier for individuals to find the right resources.
Moreover, if you are interested in rolling up your sleeves and helping out at Petri’s Place, there’s an opportunity for you! Visit their website at petrisplace.com to learn more about volunteering and contributing to this amazing cause.
At the end of the day, every little creature plays an important role in our ecosystem. By understanding and appreciating the wild neighbors we have, we can create a healthier environment for everyone. So the next time you see a raccoon rummaging through your trash or an opossum lounging under a bush, remember—they might just be doing their part in keeping your backyard balanced and beautiful!
Here’s to raising awareness and kindness toward our furry friends. Whether you get involved or simply spread the word, every effort counts to keep the wildlife in San Antonio thriving!
