The advisory kicks off at 6 p.m. on Friday and will stick around until 9 a.m. on Saturday. Mark your calendars because if you’re planning any evening plans, you’re going to want to keep a close eye on the weather!

Counties and Cities in the Advisory

Seven counties are hit by this wintery warning: Hays, Comal, Bexar, Caldwell, Guadalupe, Wilson, and Gonzales. So, if you live in or are driving through cities like San Antonio, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Spring Branch, Seguin, or Lockhart, expect some slick conditions.

The Hazardous Conditions Ahead

Here’s what’s happening: freezing drizzle is likely from Friday night through Saturday morning. This means roads are going to be slick! So, if you’re hitting the road, be prepared for some tricky driving conditions. Untreated highways and elevated roads like bridges and overpasses are especially prone to becoming very slick.

It’s projected that ice accumulations will be light, ranging from a few hundredths to a tenth of an inch. But don’t let that fool you! The areas that are likely to see the highest accumulations of ice are in northern Bexar County and regions like Comal and Hays counties, which are expected to be colder than the San Antonio metro area.

If you absolutely must travel during this advisory, it’s advisable to use caution. Remember to leave some extra space between vehicles because we all know that stopping could take a bit longer than usual. As tempting as it might be to run those errands, it might be best to stick to the couch and avoid the roads until the weather clears up!

The Good News is Coming

The chilly temperatures are expected to rise above freezing after 9 a.m. on Saturday, so hang in there! Once that happens, the ice threat will come to an end. But don’t pack away your umbrella just yet! Scattered showers and drizzle will still be around with high temperatures hitting the low 40s throughout Saturday.

Support for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

In light of the freezing temperatures, the city will be providing temporary overnight shelters for those experiencing homelessness during this advisory period. The designated overnight resilience hub will open at the Northeast Senior Center from 5 p.m. on Friday until 10 a.m. on Saturday, offering a warm place to stay as well as basic supplies.
