On a cloudy morning in Bexar County, San Antonio buzzed with anticipation as City District 6 Councilwoman, Melissa Cabello Havrda led a one-of-a-kind celebration for women judges serving the City of San Antonio and Bexar County. A significant time, as it was the day before International Women’s Day.
The event marked an important milestone in the history of Bexar County, with Havrda announcing, “For the first time in our history, there are more women judges on the bench in Bexar County. All the Civil Court judges are women, and the 4th Court of Appeals judges are all women.” Such a momentous occasion was a cause for joy and excitement, a celebration of women breaking the glass ceilings in the field of law and jurisprudence.
A shared sense of pride and camaraderie could be felt as the honored women judges, hand in hand with Havrda, walked together from the Bexar County Courthouse across the Plaza De Las Canarias to the City Council Chambers for the Women’s Day recognition. With each step, they not only affirmed their roles in the judicial system but also their commitment to the cause of justice and equality.
As these empowered women judges walked through the city, onlookers, young and old alike, couldn’t help but be awestruck at the sight. It was a moment that changed the narrative and a moment that showcased the increasing importance and dominance of women in areas once largely male-dominated. This spectacle, organized by Havrda, served as a beautiful demonstration of women’s progress in the judiciary and a beacon of hope for the future of gender equality.
While a historic moment, the celebration also served as a reminder of the work still to be done for complete gender equality in the judiciary, and all other fields. It stands as a stark symbol of progress and a call to continue to strive for more balance, more representation, and more diverse voices in our judicial system. Councilwoman Havrda’s recognition of these women judges and celebration of their achievement has not just paved the way forward but has also reaffirmed the city’s promise to foster an environment of equality and fairness.
