The streets of downtown San Antonio are about to make a historic journey back in time to the year 1923. Next month, cameras will start rolling for the eagerly anticipated “Yellowstone” spinoff, “1923”. This gripping drama, an origin story of the popular “Yellowstone” franchise, features Hollywood heavyweights like Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton.
Unexpectedly, production of the second season of the series, which launched in June, will transition to San Antonio rather than Austin. City officials have confirmed the exciting news, expressing enthusiasm for showcasing their city’s historic charm on the silver screen. Stacey Norton, marketing, film, and music administrator for the Department of Arts & Culture for the City of San Antonio, said her department is working closely with production personnel in preparation for the show’s upcoming shoots in the city.
Broadway, stretching between Pecan and Houston Streets, and Travis Street from Alamo to Jefferson Streets, are reported to be the heart of the productions. Businesses operating in these areas have been forewarned about pending street closures. The shooting sequence will be implemented in five phases, commencing Sept. 9th with preliminary preparation work in the chosen areas. The actual filming day is slated for Sept. 19th and production is expected to wrap up by Sept. 27th.
Opportunities for participation in the series aren’t limited to the production team and cast members. Legacy Casting has been putting out casting calls on Facebook for extras for the show, promising San Antonians the chance for some screen time. However, as of the time of this article’s publication, there are yet to be calls for extras specifically for the San Antonio filming dates.
As San Antonio prepares to step back in time and transform its streets into the world of ‘1923’, the community eagerly anticipates the resulting production featuring the iconic figures of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The arrival of the Paramount+ production promises not only an exciting opportunity for the local film industry but also offers a chance for San Antonians to witness first-hand the magic of Hollywood-style filmmaking.
This project symbolizes an exciting fusion of San Antonio’s rich history and Hollywood’s captivating storytelling, offering a compelling backdrop to the tale of the Dutton family and their struggles and triumphs in the early 20th century. San Antonio is more than ready for its close-up, and the countdown to the shooting days is officially on.
